| Bio: | 95% Friends-only journal In 1972, for the second time in history, the Olympic Games were staged in Germany. Unfortunately the XX Olympiad was marred by political violence when, on September 5, a terrorist group calling itself Black September stormed into the Israeli athletes' compound, killing a coach and a weightlifter. Under the weightlifter’s bloodied corpse was found the body of a small boy. That boy was me. I was raised by a kindly Munich game show host and his stewardess wife. These were halcyon times. They were cut short, however, when only five years later my adoptive mother (while serving hot towels) was killed in the collision of two Boeing jets at Los Rodeos airport, Tenerife. My father was at the premiere of Star Wars when he heard the news, and he forever after blamed Harrison Ford for his misfortune. Seeking solace, he turned to a deadly mix of karaoke and interpretive dance, a habit that would soon lead to our financial ruin. (An interesting aside - my 1999 stageplay, based on these events, toured to mixed reviews and its off-Broadway debut was closed after only two weeks. Curiously though, Harrison Ford was present in the audience on the final night, leading to a lifelong friendship I treasure greatly.) In my early teens I worked my way out of poverty, starting out as a “fluffer” on the Taiwanese version of Wheel of Fortune, and eventually working my way up to weatherman – an homage to my father’s ruined hopes. My childhood haunted me, however, and one night, drunk with cheap wine, I embarked on forty hour game of Twister with Jill Whelan (a teen actress best known at the time for her role as Vicki Stubing on ‘The Love Boat’). Going directly to the studio afterward, I became disoriented during my segment and confused kilopascals with hector Pascals. Needless to say, I was publicly humiliated, my career instantly in tatters. Traumatised, I became psychosomatically blind. One thing is certain about the wheel of fortune – it will turn. While blind, I developed incredible dexterity with my fingers and tongue, talents that have served me well to this day. Recovering as an outpatient, I wrote an eerily beautiful feminine hygiene commercial that led me to being appointed creative director at Ogilvy and Mather in Hong Kong. It was while serving in this role that I met an important client, former ABBA frontman Benny Andersson, who, DNA tests later confirmed, was my birth father. | |
